“Betta Smaragdina” The Interesting Wild Betta Fish Whose Live In Rice Paddy – Another famous wild betta fish from Asia is “Betta Smaragdina.” In Latin, “Smaragdina is Smaragdinus,” which meaning “emerald-colored.” These bettas are also called “emerald green betta,” “blue betta,” or “Mekong fighting fish.” In Thai languages, these fish are known as ปลากัดเขียว or ปลากัดอีสาน.

These wild betta fish native to Thailand and Laos. They are usually found in Mekong, Chao Praya river basins, and found mostly at Chi and Mun rivers in the Isan region, Thailand. These green bettas are also found in Mekong tributaries in Central Laos.

The Smaragdina betta is a fish that lives in sluggish and still waters. They commonly live in rice paddies, roadside ditches, swamps, ponds, and streams. They tend to prefer shaded in submerged or fly on water surface vegetation. They can also live in an environment with the substrate, including mud, leaf litter, or sand.

They could grow to a length between 5 – 7 cm. The green and blue colors on their body consist of refraction and light interference, which come from the hexagonal crystal on their body. These hexagonal crystals are less than 0.3 – 0.5 Miera.

Adding some driftwood or rocks and other aquatic plants like java moss may be attached to it. It will make their tank looks more natural and gives more shading area to them.

Like other betta fish species, the male betta smaragdina is more colorful and has fins longer than the female betta smaragdina.

Like betta Imbellis and Mahacaiensis, these betta reproduction use bubble nest to save their eggs until hatching. The water temperature should be 78 – 80ºF.

The male and female betta smaragdina should be mature and live together for breeding. When the female is interested in mating with a male, she will become lighter colored and develops vertical bars on her body. Then the male betta smaragdina will build a bubble nest before breeding.

In the spawning section, the male will wrap the female, and she will lay her eggs, then he will fertilize them. After that, both of them will collect the eggs and save them to the nest.

This process will repeat until the female spent all her eggs. In 1-2 days, the eggs would be hatched and continue to absorb all their yellow sack for 3 until 4 days. In 4 until 5 days, the fry can free-swim. At this point, the male betta can be removed from the tank.

You must know if betta Smargdina is listed as data deficient by the IUCN because this species’ population is still decreasing. They are threatened by pollution, destruction of their habitats, and hybridization with escaped domesticated betta fish.

The true betta smaragdina is rarely available in the trade, sometimes known in the betta hobbyists who breed them. And often found on the trade is the hybridization of betta smaragdina with other betta species.
