“Betta Hendra” Is A Rare And Exotic Wild Caught Betta Fish From Southeast Asia – The wild strains of betta fish are pure betta found in nature and not hybridizer or selectively bred with other species. They have the same forms as found in nature.

Before, we shared several wild betta fish types from Asia. Now we will share another exotic endemic betta fish from Southeast Asia, is “Betta Hendra.” Betta Hendra is small, skittish, and more colorful like its cousin, betta splendens. Though not commonly known, they are fascinating to behold.

The name for betta “Hendra” is taken from the fish hobbyist’s name who first discovered and exported this wild strain of betta fish species. His name is Hendra Kurniawan, and he is from Palangkaraya, Borneo, Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan), and an owner of Hendra Aquarium.

These exotic betta fish are found at Sangabau peat-swamp forest Central Kalimantan province. The Sangabau river drains this location, a typical black water system with thick marginal vegetation. Its dark brown water comes from decaying organic materials and humic substances.

The pH water at that location minimal 3.0 – 4.0, and the substrate was commonly littered with leaves, roots, and submerged tree branches.

They belong to the Coccina Complex (A”Complex” contains many fish species with similar evolution). These bettas can grow to reach 3 – 4.5 cm in length.

The Betta Hendra has dark brown or black body coloration combined with the contrast vibrant blue or green coloration on top. It shows 2 different bright red bands on the gill cover.

They have a round tail and ventral and dorsal fins like plakat. These fish have eyes generally blue, but sometimes can be black or green color. When they are stressed, the Betta Hendra will change their color to pale brown color, and the red color on their gill cover becomes so dull, almost look-like pink color.

These small betta fish do best to keep in a small aquarium. They are best kept in a 2.5-gallon aquarium for a single betta or more than it for keeping them in a pair. Adding the peat substrates are offer benefit to the color and health them.

Other substrates like soil and gravel can be used, but the gravel is not the right natural behavior. Recommended using the darker substrate like Flourite Black Sand from Seachem to increase their pretty bright natural coloration.

A tall and hardy aquarium plant that can survive in the blackwater or low tech tanks like Anubias or Cryptocoryne is highly recommended. You could add another hardscape such as driftwood to the tank to give more shady area in the tank.

In the wild, the Betta Hendra will eat small invertebrates and insects. They are actually carnivorous. But In captivity, they will be accustomed to eating fish pellets or other dried foods.

Same with betta Imbellis and Smaragdina, the betta Hendra is a bubble nester also. The male betta Hendra will create a bubble nest under the leaf or other nests media. They will spawn, and then the male wrapping the female betta. She will lay her eggs, and the male will fertilize them. Both of them will collect the eggs and saving them to the nest. After that, the female could be removed or keep stayed there, and the male will guard and take care of the eggs. After the eggs are hatched and they can free-swimming, the male can be removed. The fry can starting to be fed at this point, and you could provide them Artemia or bloodworms.
