A Beautiful And Rarely Endemic Wild Betta Fish From Indonesia “Betta Rubra” – Before, we wrote about betta imbellis, macrostoma, and mahaciensis, a wild betta fish group. Now we will share another exotic wild betta fish that is “Betta Rubra.”

The Rubra Betta is commonly called “Toba Betta.” In Latin, ‘Rubra is Ruber’ meaning ‘red.’ As their name implies, these wild betta fish have a bright red coloration.

As we know, these wild betta, also known as a family of ‘Osphronemidae (Gouramies)’ like another betta fish species. They are native to Indonesia, but only in a specific area can be found in northwestern Sumatra. These betta species are generally found in the Singkil area in Aceh province and around Sibolga in North Sumatra province. They are endemic betta fish from Aceh province.

These endemic betta fish live in peat swamp with blackish-brown water in their natural habitat and are commonly found in a dense forest. The shady environment covered by the dense trees and other vegetation that grows dense also is their favorite habitat.

These wild betta species can body length between 30 – 42 mm. The aquarium with 45*30 cm or equivalent is enough to keep a pair of Rubra Betta. If you want to save more than single pair, a larger tank is required.

These endemic betta fish can be maintained in the aquarium with fully-decorated. Still, the betta breeders commonly prefer not to use the substrate or other decorations to ease this fish’s maintenance.

You can put branches or driftwood and placed such a way to create a few shady spots. Adding some length pipes or clay plant pots can be provided further shelter for them.

The Rubra betta fish tend to grows well in the aquarium with dim lighting similar to their habitat in the wild. You could add some aquarium plants which can survive in these conditions like Taxiphyllum, Microsorum, and Cryptocoryne spp. Add some patches of floating plants into the aquarium would be helpful as well.

The water filtration should not be too strong because these bettas are the fish that inhabits sluggish water. Please do not fill the aquarium with the fully-water because they need occasional access to the humid air layer that will form above the water surface. The water temperature should be at 22 – 27 °C with pH: 5.0 – 6.5 and water hardness between 18 – 90 ppm it’s the good water conditions for these bettas.

In the wild, they commonly feed mainly on small insects and other small invertebrates. You could also provide them with dried food like fish pellets, but ensure the development of optimal color and conditions. It would be best to offer sufficient some small live food such as Daphnia, Bloodworm, or Artemia.

There are mixed reports, whether they can be kept in multiple pairs or harem-type groups, comprising a single male betta alongside some female bettas.

They can live together in an aquarium with some peaceful fish like loach or some small cyprinids or similar to them.

Same with other bettas, the male betta Rubra are more colorful and have longer fins than the female betta Rubra.

In the reproduction section, betta Rubra is the same as wild Brunei betta fish “Macrostoma Betta,” which they are paternal mouthbrooder. During the spawning section, the male betta Rubra will wrap the female so many times. The female Rubra betta will lay her eggs, and the male will fertilize the eggs. Then, the male betta will collect them directly to his mouth, and this cycle repeated until this section is completed, usually take time between 2-4 hours.

The incubation section can take time between 10-17 days. After that, the male betta will release the fully-formed fry and let them free-swimming. Note: In the incubation period, some male betta may release the eggs prematurely or swallow them if he is stressed or inexperienced, so keep the tank stay safe and don’t disturb him.

After that, the male betta can be removed from the tank. But from some reports, they can grow alongside their parent, and it actually grows them more quickly.

After the fry is going large enough, they can be fed with motile foods like Artemia, Daphnia, or brine shrimps. You could offer different foods in small amounts between 2-3 times per day for optimal growth rate. Remember, do not change the water too much at once, and regularly changes small water are preferable than intermittent larger ones.
